Florence Carnes

Center Director

Flo is a veteran educator with over 29 years of experience in early childhood education. She holds an Advanced Directors Credential and has been a director 20 years. She has dedicated all her life to working with children and providing quality care for them.

Ms. Maria

Assistant Director

Maria is our assistant director. Maria has over 17 years of experience working in early childhood education and has obtained her CDA from Florida State College of Jacksonville. Maria is amazed at how children have their own way of seeing and learning new things. She choose to work with young children so that she can have a positive impact on their lives. In her spare time, Maria enjoys spending time with her children. They enjoy going to the beach and eating out as a family.

Ms. Katrina

Infants Teacher

Ms. Katrina has over 10 years of experience working in early childhood education. She is a graduate of Ashford University where she studied English and Psychology. She currently holds her CDA and is working on her directors credential. Ms. Katrina followed in her mother’s footsteps in becoming a teacher. She loves how excited children get when they learn something new!

Ms. Katie

Infants Teacher

Ms. Katie has always had a passion for working with children. She is a graduate of Chiefland High School and is currently working on her CDA at Florida State College of Jacksonville. In her free time, Katie enjoys spending time with her family and friends and going on walks with her daughter.

Ms. Johanna

1 Year Olds Teacher

Johanna has over 20 years of experience in Early Childhood. She earned her CDA from Florida State College of Jacksonville. She is currently taking care of young one year olds and she loves it. What she loves the most about her job is the look on the children’s faces when they are learning new things. She finds joy in all the love they give to her.

Ms. Maritza

1 Year Olds Teacher

Ms. Maritza has 24 years working in early childhood education. She has always loved working with children and has a special bond with her 1 year old class. In her free time she enjoys reading a listening to music.

Ms. Shawndria

2 Year Olds Teacher

Shawndria joined the staff at The Discovery Tree Academy in 2014. She earned her Associates Degree from Florida State College of Jacksonville in Early Childhood Education. She choose this career because she loves being around children and “seeing their cute smiling faces!” Shawndria says she enjoys learning from her students and watching them grow each and every day. She celebrates her students’ individuality and uniqueness. In her spare time, Shawndria enjoys spending time with her family.

Ms. Shelia

2-3 Year Olds Teacher

Shelia has been working at The Discovery Tree for 2 years. She is a veteran educator, having worked in childcare for 25 years. She earned her CDA from Florida State College at Jacksonville. She has dedicated her life to working with young children. We are happy to have Ms. Shelia as part of the The Discovery Tree family.

Ms. Noemi

VPK Assistant Teacher

Noemi graduated from Francisco Claudio Rivera High School in Puerto Rico where she obtained her Childcare and Development Certificate through JTPA in Puerto Rico. After moving to Jacksonville, Noemi earned her Associate’s Degree in Medial Assisting from Virginia College. Noemi is passionate about working with children of all ages from infants to school age. She loves seeing their faces light up when they learn new things. Noemi is currently working on her Child Development Associate and plans to earn her Director’s Credential. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her daughter and family.

Ms. Theresa

School Age Teacher

Theresa has worked with children since 1998. She earned her Child Development Associate certification from Florida State College at Jacksonville. What she enjoys the most about her job is the love and consideration she feels every day from the children. She loves coming to work and collecting all her hugs! She says: “I find joy in getting up and making a difference in a little person’s life every day.” In her spare time, she enjoys walking, talking, and going to church.

Ms. Maryvelisse

The Discovery Tree Chef

Maryvelisse has worked in the child care for 5 years. She is an expert in preparing nutritious food for young children. She has completed her DCF training hours and CPR/First Aid hours. She loves to see the children’s smiling faces every day. She also likes to be part of their everyday growth and education. In her spare time, she likes to read, cook, travel and spend time with her family.

Learning shouldn’t end when school is out! At Camp Discovery, our school age children spend the summer exploring the variety of venues our community has to offer! Examples of our expeditions include:

The Jacksonville Zoo, Sweet Pete’s Candy Factory, Bowl America, The Alligator Farm, The Black Raven Pirate Ship and The Beaches Museum

We are open 6:30 am –6:30 pm.

$150/week—includes breakfast, lunch, snacks and field trip costs.
